Anyone who has seen Emory Road through Powell lately and has been around since the 1940's, 50's, and 60's have to be more than amazed at the changes over the years.Email Me
The only thing on Emory Road from Clinton Highway to Brickyard Road was the beautiful Broadacres Dairy Farm, a few houses scattered on either side of the road, Gill Lumber Company, The Public Library,Powell High School, and an Amoco station, Rosey's Restaurant, Lyons Grocery and Evan's Cleaners
Many thanks to Ron Evans for the above picture.
Ron has a lot of information on his website at http://rpevans.home.att.net/wfevans.htm
When it rained very much at all Beaver Creek would quickly cover the road from Clinton Highway to near Broadacres and at Spring Street, Sharp Road and Collier Road intersection..
I remember the gravel driveway to the high school and the small block building that housed the library.
I remember the 5 cent coke machine at Gill Lumber Company. I remember sitting in the gravels the last day of school in 57 drinking Pepsi-Cola with ole Cecil Mehaffie (wonder where he's at now)... I remember going to Rosie's and good ole Mr. Morris coming to see if any of his boys were down there. I remember the frantic rush out the back door and over the hill to the creek and back across the football field to school without getting snatched up by the neck by Wild Willy.(Boy I'm Tellin on myself. )
I remember the ole wooden fence around the football field and PE class being volunteered by Coach Henson to tear it down.
I remember the big snakes found under the fence that somehow ended up under neath the heat registers in school..
I remember Mr. Morris and the janitors trying to rake them out from under the heat registers and the cool banging noise that echoed through the school. (I'm not guilty of this one as I've always been very scared of 4 kinds of snakes, big ones, little ones, live ones and dead ones)
Sorta rambled off course a lil bit but, who can remember Emory Road without remembering those great times at school
I've been trying to get together enough pictures and information to honor the only unbeaten regular season football team Powell ever had but, so far no luck.. I have the names of some of the players but, would like to have team pictures, the schedule and etc. If you have any pictures or information on the 1954 team I would greatly appreciate it.
